Coast Online is first Comprehensive Indian database on Coastal Management for research, social science and governance. It is an innovative and intuitive tool to represent the coastal resources on the web. The “Coast Online” is the web portal, consist of several web map applications and database for various coastal resources. It was developed to meet the unique needs of the coastal management community.
The geographical visualization of coastal resources along the Indian coast is very much essential to identify, mitigate and sustainable management of the coastal resources of the country. The advancement in web based Geographic Information System (GIS) makes wide applications for the visualization of geographic phenomenon of the coastal resources. It incorporates several important base layers of coastal dynamics.
The various thematic layers are published as ReST (Representational State Transfer) services using the ArcGIS server. These ReST services were used to develop Web map applications by using the “ArcGIS API (Application Programming Interface) for Java Script” to visualize and extract the feature information, the web portal consists more than 20 applications with the combination of 130 ReST services (base layers).
The Coast Online is a Decision Support System (DSS) for the various coastal management sub plans, such as Coastal Regulation, Shoreline management, Conservation management, Tourism management, Disaster management, livelihood management, and pollution management. In addition to this the portal consists of various spatial statistical analysis tool, data crawling and online geo-processing.
