Internship/Dissertation/Project Work at NCSCM, Chennai

The National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) provides valuable opportunities for graduate and postgraduate students to engage in short-term internships, dissertations, and project work across a wide range of coastal and environmental fields aligned with its mandate. These include Coastal Zone Management, Marine Biology, Pollution Studies, Coastal Modelling, Climate Change, Coastal Ecology, Remote Sensing & GIS, Oceanography, Social Sciences and Environmental economics, Environmental Impact Assessment, conservation of coastal and marine resources, and governance and policy studies. These internships provide students with valuable exposure and practical learning opportunities, analytical and interpretative skills, scientific report writing, and the application of interdisciplinary research methodologies.

Guidelines for Students

These guidelines provide a clear and structured overview of the application process, expectations, and responsibilities for students participating in the internship/dissertation programme at National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) in the specified fields.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications will be considered for review and selection from students with academic backgrounds relevant to coastal and marine studies, environmental sciences, engineering, and allied disciplines. Preference may be given to candidates with an academic focus on Coastal Zone Management, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Oceanography, Climate Change, Remote Sensing & GIS, and other interdisciplinary areas aligned with NCSCM’s mandate. A maximum of four students from one institution will be accepted at a time (except Anna University, Chennai).

Application and Selection Process

  • The online application portal is available on the NCSCM website under the services section (https://ncscm.res.in/internship/)
  • Shortlisted candidates, approved by the NCSCM authorized signatory, will be informed through the official website or via email. The list will include the assigned supervisor/group and the internship/dissertation title.
  • Supervisors will be assigned based on the applicant’s academic background and research interests.
  • Selected candidates must confirm their acceptance within the given time. If no response is received, the offer may be extended to candidates on the waiting list.
  • Candidates who were previously selected but did not join are not eligible to apply again.
  • For group or collaborative projects, the number of students per group will be limited as per institutional guidelines
  • Applicants must complete the Internship registration form with required details, including personal information, duration, institution name, programme type, guide/HoD details, and a brief research objective (maximum 100 words), and upload the filled form along with all mandatory enclosures (recommendation letter, CV/Biodata, and College/University ID card) as a single PDF file.

Duration and Working Days

  • Internship Programme: Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) students may undertake internships for a duration of One to three months.
  • Dissertation Programme: Undergraduate and Postgraduate students may undertake dissertation work for a duration of Three to six months.
  • Working Days: Students are permitted on campus only during working days. In exceptional cases, attendance on weekends or holidays may be allowed with prior approval from the Supervisor and Group Head.

Report Submission and Certification

  • Upon completion of the internship/dissertation, and following the supervisor’s approval and signature on the final report/dissertation, a completion certificate will be issued

Facilities and Institutional Support

  • Access to laboratory facilities, library and relevant instruments may be provided subject to availability and project requirements.
  • Students shall strictly adhere to all institutional safety protocols, ethical standards, and operational guidelines during their tenure.
  • Internship/Dissertation students are not entitled to financial assistance, scholarships, medical facilities, or accommodation at NCSCM.
  • Students are expected to maintain discipline, confidentiality of data, and proper use of institutional resources throughout the programme.

Student Responsibilities and Code of Conduct

  • Students shall maintain discipline and adhere to all institutional rules, regulations, and code of conduct throughout the programme.
  • Students shall carry out assigned work diligently and submit periodic progress updates as required by the supervisor.
  • Students shall acknowledge NCSCM in their dissertation/report and in any publications arising from the work, subject to institutional guidelines.
  • Students are responsible for their own travel and living expenses during the programme.
  • Students shall maintain confidentiality of data, research findings, and institutional information, and shall use resources responsibly.
  • Students shall submit hard copy and soft copy of the final dissertation/report to the institute upon completion.
  • Students shall ensure originality of work and comply with academic integrity and plagiarism norms.
