Preparation of Integrated Island Management Plan for Andaman and Nicobar islands
The Project
To protect the coastal environment of the Andaman & Nicobar (A&N) and Lakshadweep group of Islands, separate Island Protection Zone (IPZ) Notification, has been notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on 6th January 2011 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. As per the IPZ Notification, 2011, Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs) are required to be prepared by UTs of A&N and Lakshadweep for the smaller islands. The IIMP display indicating their existing and proposed developments, conservation and preservation schemes, dwelling units including infrastructure projects such as schools, markets, hospitals public facilities, etc. As per the IPZ Notification, 2011, Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs), are required to be prepared by the Andaman Administration and Lakshadweep administration for the smaller islands.

Aim

Objectives
Key Findings
The following habitats are brought under the proposed conservation and preservation areas for the ANI Island:
- The entire island including the aquatic area shall be considered for the Integrated Island Management Plan.
- The IIMP shall also address vulnerability to human life and property based on elevation, geomorphology, sea level trends and horizontal line displacement and indicate suitable areas that are safe for locating dwelling units, infrastructure, and the like, and appropriate safeguards measures to protect the life and property of the local communities, infrastructure from natural hazards shall be indicated in the Integrated Islands Management Plan

Outcomes
The 27 IIM Plans of ANI and 11IIMP of Lakshadweep Islands were completed and implementation of IPZ, 2011 accomplished.

- Promotion of sustainable development
- Reduction of impact to the ecosystems by disasters.
