Preparation of Integrated Island Management Plan for Andaman and Nicobar islands

 / Research / In-House /IIM/ Preparation of Integrated Island Management for A & N Islands

The Project

To protect the coastal environment of the Andaman & Nicobar (A&N) and Lakshadweep group of Islands, separate Island Protection Zone (IPZ) Notification, has been notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on 6th January 2011 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. As per the IPZ Notification, 2011, Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs) are required to be prepared by UTs of A&N and Lakshadweep for the smaller islands. The IIMP display indicating their existing and proposed developments, conservation and preservation schemes, dwelling units including infrastructure projects such as schools, markets, hospitals public facilities, etc. As per the IPZ Notification, 2011, Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs), are required to be prepared by the Andaman Administration and Lakshadweep administration for the smaller islands.

Aim

As per the IPZ Notification, 2011, Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs), are required to be prepared by the Andaman Administration and Lakshadweep administration for the smaller islands.

Objectives

  • Protection of livelihood of traditional fisher folk communities

  • Preservation of coastal Ecology

  • Promotion of economic activity that have necessarily to be located in coastal regions.

  • To ensure long-term preservation and conservation of ecology of islands by developing appropriate management strategies.

  • To regulate existing developmental activities and suggest developmental activities that are compliable to ecology of islands without compromising environment and ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities to the islanders.

  • To suggest measures for reduction of impact of natural disasters

Key Findings

The following habitats are brought under the proposed conservation and preservation areas for the ANI Island:

  • The entire island including the aquatic area shall be considered for the Integrated Island Management Plan.
  • The IIMP shall also address vulnerability to human life and property based on elevation, geomorphology, sea level trends and horizontal line displacement and indicate suitable areas that are safe for locating dwelling units, infrastructure, and the like, and appropriate safeguards measures to protect the life and property of the local communities, infrastructure from natural hazards shall be indicated in the Integrated Islands Management Plan
Conservation Areas
1) Reef flat with dead coral
2) Jetty area
3) Tourism destination
Preservation Areas
1) Mangroves and other forest area
2) Seagrass beds/sea weeds
3) Live coral cover
4) Sandy beaches
5) Turtle nesting ground

Outcomes

The 27 IIM Plans of ANI and 11IIMP of Lakshadweep Islands were completed and implementation of IPZ, 2011 accomplished.

  • Livelihood security to the fishing communities, tribal and other local communities living in the coastal areas;
  • Conservation and protection of coastal ecosystems
  • Promotion of sustainable development
